Question 1: How do you see the construction industry in the year 2023? Do you think this year will be a “digital year” for construction professionals?

Given that we are in the last quarter of 2023, it is more about looking back to what has happened this year and how rapidly the industry has changed.

There has been a significant focus on increasing female participation in the industry with several Federal and State Government initiatives implemented.

Several Tier 1 companies also promote their initiatives and programs to increase gender diversity.

I believe 2023 is the start of what is coming digitally, with new initiatives to be adopted quickly moving forward, with a huge focus on gender equity, the pay gap, and changing the culture in the industry.

Question 2: The construction industry has undergone dynamic changes over the years. What do you consider the biggest challenge for this industry now?

I believe the biggest challenge for the industry moving forward is the culture and finding the people to deliver the projects. Construction is the #1 industry for mental health issues, and a construction worker commits suicide every 2nd day. Construction needs 226K people in the next 2 years and 460K in the next 5 years.

The construction industry is made up of multi-generational individuals. Sadly, some in the later stages of their construction careers have traditional ways of thinking and a significant amount of subconscious bias. Consequently, they are not necessarily ready for the rapid changes that are coming, which include being receptive to Gen Z's, Millennials, women, and migrants who are coming into the industry.

This rigid thinking does not create a welcoming environment for a diverse workforce. It can greatly impact a person's mental, emotional, and psychological well-being, negatively affecting the culture. In turn, this makes it hard for the industry to retain people.

Question 3: What potential do you see in the latest construction technology trends? Are they capable of boosting the productivity of construction professionals?

I see the potential for technology trends in the Adaptive Learning Space.

Educating about psychosocial hazards (sexual harassment, bullying, discrimination, intimidation) and soft skills to manage these hazards, such as communication, equality, respect, mindset, and resilience, will arm individuals with fundamental knowledge to thrive in the industry.

Research shows that productivity is increased with diversity and effective communication and collaboration, and, in Australia, $56B can be saved yearly.

We are working on this at EPIC and are currently partnering with a company to develop 15 modules to tackle psychosocial hazards and teach soft skills to manage these hazards. The aim is to roll this out nationally to companies and construction projects so they can be used for inductions and toolboxes, as well as education and training purposes.

We understand that change can only be implemented through education and awareness; this is our primary focus to help effect positive change in the industry.

Question 4: Where do you see the construction industry in the next five years? Please share your valuable insights with our readers.

I envisage a better work-life balance in the next 5 years, as the hours and rosters worked in the industry are not long-term sustainable. Now, there is greater awareness of this issue; this will significantly change in the future to retain workers.

I also see the construction industry being extremely diverse, with a significant increase of females and more females in leadership positions.

I see a significant shift in the industry's culture for the better. There is an increased awareness of how unhealthy the current environment is, and there are a lot of great companies and organizations doing awesome work to help positively shift the culture in the industry.
