The construction industry is currently experiencing an exciting phase of growth while simultaneously facing numerous challenges. Some of these challenges are long-standing issues while others are newly emerging.
Various approaches are being employed to address construction-related concerns, including the treatment of slow technology adoption rates as a singular overarching challenge or as a multitude of separate problems such as communication breakdowns, documentation issues, and scheduling conflicts.
So to shed some light on the same, we interviewed the industry expert to help our audience understand the impact of technology on construction:
Who Did We Interview?
Carol Massay is the Head of Construction at the Access Group, which is the largest UK HQ based business software company. With a career expanding over 34 years working closely within the construction industry and first-hand experience working with some of the UK's largest contractors, from house building to civil engineering, she has an amazing portfolio.
Her mission is to continue to promote the construction sector as a great place to expand your career and provide world-class technology to attract skills from other walks of life to the sector.
Carol continues to support the construction industry to help them to digitally transform their business to be more efficient in the way they operate and deliver construction projects.
I truly hope so. I would like to say that the construction industry is "steadily" recognizing that digital transformation is key to working more efficiently and driving costs down which will increase profit margins which are already tight
The biggest challenge is skills and attracting more into the sector and also more talent from diverse backgrounds. The biggest challenge is to increase more women in the sector.
There is great potential with some amazing new tech coming in to address the recruitment process and also improve processes by introducing cloud tech and mobile applications. Again allowing information to be accessible at the right time to make key project decisions.
The construction sector has the new Infrastructure Levy and the Whole Life Carbon assessments which is to ensure the net zero targets are hit for 2050.
With these changes, we will see an increase in acceleration in the use of cloud technology. You will see the SMEs embracing the use of tech as their way of engaging with the bigger contractors to ensure improved visibility of project delivery.
I also believe that there will be an increase of women and diverse and neurodiverse coming into the sector to help increase the numbers and the quality of people. There will also be a merger of some of the smaller specialist SMEs into large companies.
"Construction is digitalisation ready"
If something feels hard to do, the success of completing will be worth it in the end. See every challenge as an opportunity worth trying.
